Convention can be good or bad; used consciously and inventively, it can be beautiful. But conventions are limits, and limits should be recognized for what they are. They are subtle forces pulling on your work – and they can exert a dangerous hold.

The cool thing about the kinds of nonfiction I write is that the conventions aren’t all that limiting. Tell the truth. Tell the story. Have a point. Care about the subject.

This will eventually work itself out.

Any convention can be turned into a great tool, hijacked in service of your own vision.
