What’s the difference between genre and style? Style is the unstable essence an artist brings to a genre…

My preferred genre is non-fiction, specifically memoir and personal narrative essays. I dabble occasionally in fiction (mainly fan fiction) and (very, very bad) poetry. I also write jokes for stand-up sets. Those could also be considered non-fiction, I suppose. I don’t write or tell jokes that aren’t true to me.

I find it interesting that, for someone who spent years of her life telling lies to herself and others, I have a distinct need to tell the truth and keep telling the truth over and over. Perhaps if I keep telling the truth, someone out there will hear me.

A fresh style breathes life into any genre.

I don’t know if my style is fresh or unique, but it’s mine. I have a voice. It’s still developing, but I’m certain that it belongs to me. I fought for and nearly died for it.
